About the artist: Ehren Tool is a Marine Corp veteran who served in the 1991 Gulf War. He prolifically throws cups on the potter’s wheel, decorates them with military insignia, and gives them away, many to veterans and their families. Tool turned to ceramics in search of a purpose and place in civilian life following his service. “I wanted to talk about the strange places civilian and military cultures meet,” he says. “Clay seemed like a great medium to use for this purpose. Clay is very responsive and immediate, but once it goes through the fire it is unchanged for many years. War is fluid and chaotic and you can’t take it back. Wars have consequences that last well after the bombs have fallen and the dead [have] been buried. I hope these clay cups can be touchstones for unspeakable conversations centuries after I am dead.”
